Sulfur Dioxide(SO2) Gas Detection
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is a colorless and extremely toxic gas. It has a irritating pungent odor. SO2 is mainly used in pulp and paper mills, chemical processing, food and beverage, coking operations and petroleum refineries. Carbon fules often contain sulfur compounds and their combustion will generate SO2. Therefor the main source of SO2 in the environment is burning of coal and oil in oil refineries and power stations.
Sulfur dioxide is a highly toxic gas and inhalation through the lungs poisons people. Breathing in sulphur dioxide causes irritation of the nose and throat. Higher concentrations causes nausea, vomiting, stomach pain and corrosive damage to the respiratory system and lungs. People with asthma are more sensitive to the effects of sulphur dioxide. In case of skin contact, it causes stinging pain, skin redness and blisters. In case of eye contact, it causes burning and watering of the eyes. Blindness may occur at high concentrations.
Sulfur dioxide becomes sulfuric acid (H2SO4) when combined with water, which is highly corrosive and cause chemical burns. It is one of the main chemicals that causes acid rain. Due to its danger it is important to monitor sulfur dioxide levels with SO2 gas detectors in related process.
Prosense uses different electrochemical gas sensors to detect SO2 gas. Depending of the application specifications and environmental conditions Prosense provides SO2 gas detectors in 0-10 to 0-100ppm measurement range with safe area or flameproof models.
