Safety For All
On August 4, 2020, 2 thousand 750 tons of ammonium nitrate, which had been kept in a warehouse for 6 years, exploded in the Port of Beirut. This explosion, which nearly destroyed the city of Beirut and left more than 300,000 people homeless, raised many security issues.
Ammonium nitrate is a material used in fertilizer production with a high risk of poisoning and explosion. Explosives prepared with ammonium nitrate were used in the attacks on the British Consulate General, HSBC Bank, and two synagogues in Istanbul in 2003.
Despite this, this material is not prohibited. Because economically, many countries need this substance in agriculture and mining enterprises. Since ammonium nitrate used in fertilizer production is very efficient and economical, its risks are accepted and it is allowed to be transported, stored, and used within protection measures. Ammonium nitrate, which was stored in the Lebanese port in an unsafe manner despite various preventive attempts for 6 years, turned into a bomb that destroyed the city with a fire. Although many materials like this have various dangers, they can be used in accordance with certain rules due to their importance for industry or urban life. The important thing is that these rules must be always followed and the applications must be controlled carefully.
As Prosense Technology, we believe that human and environmental safety should be above all policies. Safety rules should always be operated as a whole and constantly checked.
